FULL DAY CHAKANA RESERVE
IN SEARCH OF THE ANDEAN CONDOR AND SPECTACLED BEAR

This trip will take you through a great scenery in the Ecuadorian High Andes. The roads will border one national protected area Antisana Ecological Reserve and Fundación Jocotoco’s Chakana Reserve therefore the birdlife is great, and the scenery is quite amazing. The altitudinal range covered is over 3600 M. We spend the entire day in the area, watching for Andean Condors (should be easy!) and other beautiful birds, even for Spectacled Bears, with a traditional lunch at a small “refugio” Casa Antisanilla inside the reserve with a magnifiscent view of the Andes; back to Hotel in Quito in late PM.

DIRECTIONS AND ROUTE:

Leave Quito early at 7:o0 AM to the East where the Antisana Volcano is located. On clear days, the views of the Antisana glaciers are dazzling. Our first stop is in the small town of Pintag to take a traditional sweet bread. Then we continue to Tambo Condor to use bathrooms and take a cup of coffee. There we can enjoy the hummingbird feeders where we can see the Giant Hummingbird and the astonishing Ecuadorian Hillstar. Then, we continue to the strategical located gazed of Chakana reserve where we can look for the Andean Condor nests and the Spectacled bear who used to walk around the “Peñón del Ishco” that is just in front of the Porch. We can also see some other species such as the endemic Carunculated Caracara, Variable Hawk.

Amazing Birding! Copalinga is worth a stay. Ask to have a guide at least for one day, ours was Walter, and he really knew the ideal spotting sites. Our hostess was Rosa, she is a very good and innovative cook, they both made our stay very enjoyable. Interestingly, the greatest birding was not during our short walk (last of landslides) inside Podocarpus National Park, but outside of it, and also right there in Copalinga. Enjoy!

Paola from Jocotoco put together a 30 day trip for me. Starting and Quito heading north to cloud forest all the way to the south to Amazon jungle. I stayed in six lodges and The beautiful city of Cuenca. at every return drivers and the guides were professional, on time, and so very helpful. I strongly recommend using this nonprofit organization to assist you in your wildlife viewing and general cultural Ecuador tours…

We were exposed to a number of very diverse areas in Ecuador, from the high Andes to the rain forest. Our focus was on bird watching and we saw an enormous variety of birds. The staff at the lodges were kind and knowledgeable, the food terrific and accomodations good. It was a wonderful experience.
